Dr Ashok Gunawardene graduated from the University of Birmingham, UK in 2009 and has since undergone extensive training in laparoscopic general and gastrointestinal surgery across the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Australia. With a strong academic foundation, he completed a PhD exploring the link between inflammation and colorectal cancer and has published widely in both scientific and surgical literature.
Dr Ashok integrates the latest scientific evidence into his clinical practice and has developed a special interest in benign upper gastrointestinal (GI) surgery through advanced training in the field.
He is an Examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and also plays an active role in teaching surgical skills to junior doctors as a RACS course instructor.
Dr Ashok is committed to patient-centred care. He listens carefully, prioritises patient safety, and delivers personalised management plans in a timely manner. Consultation and procedure wait times are typically kept within 2–4 weeks. He also offers out-of-hours appointments, telehealth consultations, and accepts urgent referrals.
For appropriate cases, direct hospital admissions can be arranged for acute conditions such as suspected appendicitis or cholecystitis.
